Hot Topic!
I just attended a session regarding Social Media and using it in one’s practice. It was an interesting breakout session, and there were several concerns regarding Facebook and other social media brought up by fellow attendees. The major concern seemed to be privacy issues, and the appropriateness of giving “opinions” in such a public manner. There was also discussion regarding “Tweeting” on Twitter while one is touring a college or sitting in a session. One consultant commented that it was a rude practice to “tweet”, another pointed out that there was no difference in “tweeting” and taking notes. Both viewpoints have merit, in my opinion, as a former college professor I am used to students taking notes on paper or computer, but I have to admit I find it distracting when students are constantly texting while talking at the same time. Technology takes some getting used to, and often technology takes directions that were not anticipated. My opinion is one does not have to use social media, but we all need to keep up with the new technological trends.
